The Mauao Earrings
These hoops are 1.5 cm in diameter and are made of gold plated stainless steel so won’t tarnish, but may slightly fade after lots of wear in the water.
Named after the maunga (Mountain) of Mount Maunganui, Aotearoa.
The Mauao Earring is a tribute to home - and the powerful Māori legend that gives this place its name.
Each earring features three freshwater pearls, representing the three sacred mountains in the story of Mauao: Ōtanewainuku, Pūwhenua, and Mauao.
As the story goes, a nameless mountain fell in love with the beautiful Pūwhenua, but her heart belonged to Ōtanewainuku.
Crushed with sorrow, Mauao asked the patupaiarehe (fairy people) to drag him to the sea. But before they could reach the ocean, the sun rose - the night fairies had to flee, leaving him where he stands now - creating the place I call home, Mount Maunganui.
That mountain became known as Mauao, meaning "caught by the dawn"
This piece captures both the softness and strength in the story - a reminder of love, longing, and the deep connection to land and identity.
Crafted for those who carry a piece of home wherever they go.
Surf-safe, sunset-safe and shower-safe — always.
